Feeding at Verbena bonariensis in my garden in SW France. August 2008.
Taken on 12th April 2008, a Queen feeding on Pieris japonica 'Forest Flame'. She will build a nest and first produce female workers, which will then help with the nest and tending of young.
On 12th April 2008, Lincoln UK. The Queen taking a rest in the sun on old leaves, she is very large.
The Queen's face, it is fairly small for her size.
On 21st April 2008, a Queen feeding on Victoria plum flowers. You can see parasitic mites on the right shoulder.

On 13th July 2008, a female worker feeding on wild white clover, Trifolium repens in my garden. Females have black hairs on the face.
On 13th July 2008, a male feeding on wild white clover. It has yellow hairs on the face, orange hairs on the hind legs. Yellow hairs can also be on the lower thorax, and 1st segment of the abdomen.
Always take care when repotting plants in tubs. I've found many of these beautiful bees deep in the soil in my potted plants. We know that one overwintered in a tub of Potentillas.
