Viewing Families in the Order "Eurypygiformes" (Sunbittern)

The Eurypygiformes order contains two species: the sunbittern and the kagu. These birds are native to tropical regions from Guatemala to Brazil. They prefer hot, humid forest regions. Sunbitterns have brownish-gray feathers that help them blend into the forested regions. When they spread out their wings, however, they show bright central eye patterns on the mid-feathers. These 'eyes' are colored red, yellow and black, and are shown only to other sunbittern, perhaps as a form of communication.
