Amend! Amend! Amend!
Next I put in the brick edging and backfilled with both top soil and peat moss. Raising the planting area up gives me workable soil that I can control the condition of and allows water retention to occur in the heavy clay I have here. The neighbor's house is a tad bit higher than mine and thus water runs downhill to this spot. Just amended enough to have a loose planting medium for new plants. The heavy clay should keep the water at the root zone.
