variable color pattern and form each year, not reliable for doubling, probably due to unreliable weather here.

I received six of these lily bulbs as a substitute for another red lily I had ordered from a major mail-order nursery. They were labeled -
Ruby Slippers Double, Asiatic Lily, Lilium x 'Sphinx'
Height: 2-3'
Space: 9-12"
Depth: 5-6"
Plant in Full Sun to Partial Shade

I wasn't sure what to expect, but they are rather attractive. I'm not sure, however, that I would have picked them as a first choice based on appearance alone.

This lily is very sporadic in the north. It cannot tolerate early freeze thaw situations. This year it was great and in other years it tends to bloom with deformed buds and flowers. It is very weather dependent. Mulch is not that much help in controlling the cycle of this lily and most other doubles in the north.

Reliably a double bloomer. 'Sphinx' is the trade name for 'Holecaca'.
