Jatropha

A nonwoody herb. It puts up several large, coarsely toothed palmate leaves on long stalks, with rather showy white and yellow (I find them to be pink) five-petaled flowers that form clusters at the ends of the stems. These mature into little, plump, green seedpods shaped like footballs.


The roots are enormous, an earth-tumor, warty and succulent-tough. The plant is found in abundance in the southeastern corner of Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, on mesas and rolling hills, from 3,500 to 7,000 feet.


The root is a strong laxative, toxic in large doses.

Also called Dragon's Blood, although I only found a Yucca type plant searching that name. Another name is Sangre de Drago...(Dragon's Blood) of which there are three different species.
