I grew this from seed. The first year it was small and pretty much browed by deer. The second year it was quite large, the deer left it alone, and it blooming with beautiful soft pink spikes about 4' tall for a long, long time. This is its third year and it is magnificent. It is not spreading at all (I wish it would send some seedlings into the garden). It is a fabulous backdrop for one of our gardens.
