Grafts well onto Thuja occidentalis (Eastern White Cedar) and when grafted onto occidentalis, it can be grown in clay soil whereas a Chamaecyparis obtusa 'on its own roots' (cutting propagated) will not tolerate clay. Most all cultivars of Chamaecyparis obtusa in Zone 5a without protection are subject to winter burn and losses. This species can also be grafted to Platycladus orientalis/Thuja orientalis (Oriental Arborvitae) and it too does well in clay soil as an "understock"/"rootstock".
