Border Phlox 'Lichtspel' (aka 'Lichtspiel') is hybridized by Piet Oudolf and introduced in 1995. Phlox 'Lichtspel' (translated: Play of Light) has a good tolerance for shade. It flowers during mid to late summer/ early autumn with soft pink flowers that have a darker pink 'eye'. It can reach a height of 160 cm. It stems are very sturdy, sturdy enough that Piet Oudolf disrespectful likens Phlox 'Lichtspel' to a 'fietsenstandaard' (a bike stand).

During the summer, the clumps of erect, leafy stems carry panicles of lilac-rose flowers. The stems and remaining flowerheads fade to a warm pale brown decorative winter seedheads.
