Liverworts are not true plants, but non-vascular plant-like organisms related to mosses. This particular variety is one of the most widely distributed and grows in moist areas from the Arctic to the tropics. It is said to resemble leafy mosses or green seaweed. I have liverwort growing in an area that routinely floods and is in shade at all times. It can look unsightly but as far as I know, it does not harm any neighbouring plants. The only problem is that it can form a tight mat on the soil surface, preventing the seedlings of other plants from emerging. However, the pointed tips of my lily-of-the-valley easily sliced through it in the spring.
