Editor's Note

Plant Patent number 5143 has expired.

Some resources list Ilex berries as toxic when consumed in large quantities.

The toxic principals Illicin, possibly saponic glycosides, and triterpenoids can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

We tend to err on the side of caution in PlantFiles, and the danger notation in the details above is to warn gardeners, parents and pet owners to look further for more information.
