This Geranium species grows as well in the Central Valley of Chile as high up in The Andes Mountains, where it probably behaves as an annual. It’s natural habitat is between medium tall grasses or shrubs and it tolerates full sun although it prefers either morning sun or light shade.

This Geranium is reported to grow up to 80cm tall (31 ½”) and spreads some 60cm (2’). The leaves are quite attractive and some basal leaves remain evergreen during the colder months in my equivalent to a USA zone 9b. Flowers are either pink or slightly lavender coloured and bloom from late winter to early summer.

It’s a fast growing species that can bloom on the first year from seeds, but will most likely do it from the second year on. It’s main requirements are light moisture, nutrient rich soil and good drainage.

Sowing recommendations: during autumn, in a mix of two parts compost, one part regular garden soil and one part sharp river sand. Cover this mix with a fine layer of river sand, water, distribute your seeds and barely cover them with more sand. Gently apply some even pressure. Place your sowing pan / pots either in a cold frame, a cold greenhouse or a sheltered place and let Mother Nature do the rest. The seedlings can be picked once they have 2 true leaves.

Geranium berterianum makes a great full sun / light shade groundcover and can also be planted under non-compact shrubs or among bulbs.
