It is important to note that poppy seeds sold in grocery stores for culinary purposes are harmless, as the toxins have been destroyed by heat. We tend to err on the side of caution in PlantFiles, and the danger notation in the details above is to warn gardener, parents and pet owners to look further for more information.

When pods get brown and hard, but and store them in open paper bags. When completely dry, crack pods open to remove seeds. Store harvested poppy seed in the freezer to keep it fresh and pest free. The seeds collected from this poppy can be used for cooking and baking.
