This is a genus of about 57 species of tall, rhizomatous perennials with cane-like stems and linear or lance-shaped leaves. Small flowers surrounded by waxy, colorful bracts are borne in torch-like clusters at the tops of leafless stems arising from the rhizome.
CULTIVATION:
Frost tender, these tropical plants need a moist, humus-rich soil in full sun or part-shade with a minimum temperature of about 64*F. Water well during growth and less when dormant. Indoors they require warmth, hight humidity and plenty of water throughout the summer growth period. Propagate from seed or division.
