Pale lavender tubes flare out to deeper violet blue flowers near the lips 20 to 30 mm long, 40 to 100 cm tall, blooms June-September in dry open deciduous forest near coastal sandy soil locations. Deeply serrate, slightly narrow spade shaped leaves 60 to 100 mm long with a semi glossy surface; petioles ranging 15 to 50 mm. Plain short hairs on the leaf are very sparse and extremely short, if present at all. Flower bearing stems are round with medium length gland tipped hairs, also present on the calyxes, outer seed pod walls, and tiny rabbit ear shaped leaves on the stem just underneath the paired flowers. Seeds black and papillate. Originates from eastern Mediterranean regions of Africa and southeast Europe, later introduced to western and middle Europe north to Scandinavia. An all around choice plant for locations not in full sun. Will also bloom almost as well in mostly shady locations.
