Editor's Note

All parts of all Dieffenbachia species and cultivars contain the toxic plant chemicals calcium oxalate and proteolytic enzymes. Painful and immediate swelling of the mouth and throat occurs after chewing on any part of a Dieffenbachia. Speech impediment can occur, sometimes lasting for several days. In rare cases, these plants may cause swelling severe enough to block the airways. Avoid eye contact with the juices which can result in intense pain and swelling.

We tend to err on the side of caution in PlantFiles, and the poisonous details listed above are a precaution to gardeners, parents and pet owners.

This variety is rather dark-green and whitish veined in the middle. Easy grower and very irritating, so careful when handling; wear gloves. Don't like full sun, rather partial shade. A very good indoor plant.
