Notes from GRIN
Smooth, clear, waxy skin. Crisp, juicy, mildly subacid flesh, much firmer than either parent. Flavor less sweet than Golden Delicious, less sprightly than Pippin. Quality is comparable to Pippin. Does not ripen to maximum quality and flavor unless in cold storage until late Jan. Excellent sauce and pies. Heavily productive tree, alternate bearing if allowed to overbear. Ripens very late; somewhat susceptible to late summer rot; very tolerant of conditions causing severe lenticel and skin russeting on Golden Del.

Developed in: Virginia, United States
Cross made 1944, selected from crossed made in the 1950's; first fruited 1952. Tested as VPI 8.

"Developed around 1976 by George Oberle at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. It is a cross of Newtown Pippin and Golden Delicious, with a flavor characteristic of Newtown Pippin. It reaches its peak flavor after storage for several months. The smooth, clear skin is bright yellow with an attractive pink blush. The clean, white flesh is crisp and juicy with a pleasant, distinctive flavor. An outstanding dessert apple, but also well-suited for culinary uses. Ripens in early October and is a fine keeper."

Available at Big Horse Creek Farm.
