This plant grows all over my yard. I try to transplant while it's young to places that I don't mind it growing. It's gotten to at least 10ft tall. Can be trimmed as a hedge and flowers from spring until it's just too cold. Butterflies are all over it and the seeds are eaten by birds (that's why they are all over the place). Looses it's leaves over winter and if trimmed to the ground, will sprout right back up in the spring. Small prickers along the stems. I'm sure it's a native. I like the smell of the cut branches, some people don't.
