The Nippon Orangequat is a hybrid made by Dr.Eugene May of the USDA that was introduced in 1932. It is a cross between the Satsuma Mandarin (Citrus reticulata var.unshiu) with the Meiwa Kumquat (Fortunella crassifolia). It can be eaten whole like a kumquat as the skin has a sweet pleasant flavor. It can also be enjoyed sliced thin while immature to use as a lime subsitute or to make jam or marmalade. It is quite cold hardy in Zone 8b and should prove reliable in Zone 8a on most winters.
