The history behind this begonia is written up by San Marcos Growers: "This plant was created in 1977 by legendary begonia hybridizer Rudolf Ziesenhenne (1911-2005) AKA "Mr. Begonia" and holds the American Begonia Society Registration number of 598. Irene Tapia lived and gardened in Santa Barbara until her death at 93 in 1999. She sold plants at the Farmers Market with her son who also has the Ziesenhenne begonia hybrid 'John Tapia' named for him."
