I purchased this plant at the flower market section in downtown Seoul. It is a traditional flower that everyone in Korea knows as "Halmi-ggott" where "Halmi" is a shortened Korean version of grandmother and "ggott" means flower. There is a sad story behind this flower. Apparently, it is called the "grandmother-flower" because legend has it that an old woman with 3 daughters died of loneliness after none of them visited her. After she was buried, this flower grew over her grave. Another reason for the name is the downward arch of the flower stems that resemble the crooked backs of elderly women. Finally, the downy silver fuzz on the plant reminds one of someone who has lived for many years.
