Tibetan blue poppies and Tibetan white poppies grow primarily in the colder zones. These plants are more limited by hot summer temperatures than by cold winter temperatures. They thrive in areas with cool summer temperatures (60-70 degrees). The zone designations used to describe the hardiness of a plant are misleading because they describe the low temperatures for that area but not the high temperature reached during the summer. As a general rule, these plants do not survive hot summers.

Regarding sun or shade: In colder climates like Anchorage these plants will grow in full sun but need to be watered more frequently. They will grow in almost full shade. I have some plants in nearly full shade that are 15 years old but the plants don't get as large as those that get more sun.
