According to http://www.kadzel.cz, this species is a sub-shrub, native to montane-to-subalpine rocky slopes of the Sierra Nevada of Spain.

The flower stems project through a canopy of spines, which protect the softer foliage below.

The pictured plant has come through one zone 3 winter, to this point, in Alberta, Canada.
