What a great tree this is. Dove tree is one of the plants that young horticulturists in the Ohio River valley read and dream about when they are learning their craft, but never really get to see in their home stomping grounds. They have to travel someplace really exotic, like say, Halifax in Nova Scotia. The guidebooks said it was so.

One of those young people did this in 1988, and upon finally arriving in the Public Gardens there in October, he was greeted by a finely labeled -- stump. He was sad, as you might expect.

Fast forward to the newly-trained landscape architect flush on a field trip to the northeast corridor metroplex, and imagine his delight when discovering a large fully flowering specimen of Davidia in Wave Hill, north of New York City. He was now happy.

Since then, several visits to Durand-Eastman Park in Rochester NY have yielded the knowledge and images of some wonderful old specimens ensconced there. This is truly a wonderful plant for those with fortunate enough conditions to grow it well.
