It grows around my part of south east England as a wild plant in ancient woodland and is in flower in April (see photos taken on april 20th 2002)

Perennial with a creeping rhizome from most of Europe. Has 4 -8 mid green oval stalkless leaves held in whorls. Bears a solitary star shaped flowers up to 3 inches across with an outer ray of thin green petals and an inner ray of white petals, there are twice as many stamens as inner petals. Seed is held in a black - blue/black berry like capsule.

Flowers June to August.

Native of damp woodland in lime rich soils. Excellent woodland plant, like moist, leafy soil in partial or full shade.

Prefers to be undistrubed and will increase where happy but you can divide the plants when the leaves have died down.

Will cause mild stomach upset if berry is ingested.
