I first discovered Grass of Parnassus along a secondary road about 22 miles north of Seward, Alaska. The plant has tiny basal ovate leaves and a thin straight leafless stem with a small cupped star-shaped white flower in mid-summer.

It transplants easily, having a shallow root system, and grows well from seed. Seeds should be surface sown, since they require light to germinate.

Neutral Baa On Sep 8, 2001, Baa wrote:

Very hardy little perennial which can be found in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Has a basal rosette of a single, heart shaped, light green leaf sometimes spotted red underneath. Bears a solitary, terminal (situated in the end of the flower stalk), 5 petalled, white with darker veins flower. Seeds are brown and tiny.

Flowers June to September

Needs a humus rich, poorish, wet but not stagnant soil in full sun.
