Small ground hugging thistle native to Britain and adjacent areas of Europe, prefers calcareous (lime rich) soils, common on chalk downs.
Before identifying as stemless thistle be careful the plant isn't a very young thistle of some other species, they all start out at ground level and appear 'stemless' before they start to grow upwards.
