Per the 1928 Lee R. Bonnewitz Iris and Peony catalog of Van Wert, Ohio:
LONGFELLOW (Brand). A bright red, double Peony of somewhat irregular formation on medium tall stems, which bloom in early midseason and which is valuable not only for cut flowers, but also for use on the landscape. Not quite as bright in color as LORA DEXHEIMER, but it has more blooms on its laterals than that variety, and so has a longer blooming season. $3.50

Per the APS website:
LONGFELLOW (Brand, 1907) - Double - Red - Midseason. Rather dwarf. Fragrance not notable. Large bright crimson, intensified by golden yellow stamens near center; fairly floriferous; strong stems. Excellent foliage. One of the most popular red peonies because of its distinct, fadeless color and general dependability, both for cutting and for garden decoration. It would be better if it bloomed more freely and if the flowers were always symmetrical.
