A terrestrial orchid found in various places in the Northern Hemisphere.

Has up to 10, lancelike - ovate, mid green leaves borne opposite each other. Bears on one side of a twisted stem, up to 20, dark red flowers with a loose, cup shaped lower lip. Very occasionally you may see a white flowered one.

Flowers June-July

Likes a moist, well drained, humus rich, neutral to alkaline soil (grows well in limestone areas), in shade. Good woodland orchid.
