The toxic principal Diterpene coleonol is reported to cause allergic dermatitis and a red rash with repeated and frequent contact. The symptoms are minor skin irritation that lasts only a few minutes.
We tend to err on the side of caution in PlantFiles, and the danger notation in the details above is to caution gardeners, parents and pet owners to look further for more information.

Grown as an annual in z4b, this plant has been spectacular. Grows quickly, propagates from cuttings rapidly, and so far has wintered over in a cool basement near, but not under, lights. (Under cool-white bulbs this cultivar has turned solid rusty-red...as soon as it was removed from the lights and placed out of direct lighting it began returning to its normal color and markings.)
Defiance is one cultivar I hope I'll always have in my garden.
