Evergreen shrub from Southern Europe and Asia minor regions.

Has dark green, glossy, broad lance shaped or elliptic leaves. Bears tubular-funnel shaped, light purple, reddish purple flowers which are spotted yellow in the throat, they may also bear white flowers but that is quite unusual. Flowers tend to be sticky.

Likes acidic, humus rich, moist but well-drained soil in partial or light shade.

A major problem in the British Isles as it has escaped from gardens into the wild. They cause a great deal of problems to the local flora and fauna through loss of habitat. They are very fast growing and spring up anywhere there is acid soil.
