Benchmark was developed by Dr. Ron Riley of Rogers Seed Company during the early 1990's. It was briefly popular in the Georgia and West Mexico fresh markets as a shipper bean. It has moderately fibrous pods, 5.5" (~14 cm) length, 4 sieve (~9 mm) diameter. It is relatively early, somewhat heat tolerant, with moderately fast seed development. Contains the dominant I gene which gives resistance to seed born Bean Common Mosaiv Virus (BCMV). Benchmark has been replaced in these markets mostly by the variety 'Charon'.
