According to the authors of "Encyclopedia of Hydrangeas" C.J. and D.M. Van Gelderen (2004 - Timber Press), "This natural forma from Japan is very similar to the species, but the leaves, branches, and panicles are softly pubescent. Introduced by J. Russell. The plant is tender.
