This low, slowly spreading perennial from Daghestan, western Asia makes a pretty, silvery edging or carpet in the garden. It needs good drainage and likes garden loam or sandy soil.

GERMINATION:

Sow seed on surface of a well-drained seed sowing mix at about 20*C-25*C (~70*F) with light. Normally, S. daghestanica will not germinate in the dark, but application of GA-3 (Gibberellic Acid may help germination. Although germination usually occurs within 10 - 14 days, it can be erratic.

follow-up -

On 2/18/07, I wintersowed 7 seeds of Salvia daghestanica in a recycled qt-size yogurt container within a vented plastic baggy. About 1/8" gritty sand was on the surface, the seeds went on top of that, and then they were lightly covered with a sprinkle of more gritty sand. 3 seeds germinated, beginning 4/29/07 and were grown on with gritty sand around their crowns.

Since Latin binomial names are being deleted from the winter sowing database, and since there are so many different silver-leaved sages, and since this data pertains only to this species, I am entering it here.
