Editor's Note

Some resources note that all parts of the Paeonia plants are poisonous when ingested in large quantities.

Symptoms of poisoning are vomiting, paresthesias, and accelerated heartbeat. Resources note that it has been proven that a small dose provokes excessive menstrual bleeding, which leads to abortion, while at the same time makes the clotting of blood easier.

We tend to err on the side of caution in PlantFiles, and the danger notation in the details above is to warn gardeners, parents and pet owners to look further for more information.

I have this plant in nearly full shade, moderate moisture. It is a bit slow to emerge compared to "ordinary" peonies, and the foliage is sort of olive-green to leaf green, and much less succulent (thinner, more "leafy") than "ordinary" peonies. The blooms are also smaller than hybrid peonies--I'd say no more than 3 inches across most years.
