It is cultivated by both tropical and hardy orchid growers. It spreads fast from seed (yes, it actually does, in the greenhouses it might even get a bit of a weed =) ). Nearby spexcies, Asian S. amoena is hardy in most of Europe and I think it even grows in Europe, somewhere in Russia... I am not 100% sure though.

One of the most widespread species of orchids in the world!

Found throughout Japan. Also found in China, Korea, Taiwan, etc., and it seems to have established in Florida. There are a few varieties.

A wide range of flower forms and variagations are known in Japan, and those selected cultivars form a group called "Komachi Ran".

Seeing there are two species of Ladies Tresses already in the database, I thought it appropriate to add the Australian species. It is interesting that despite its varied orchid flora, this is the only orchid genus that Australia shares with Europe and North America. I do not know of this plant existing in cultivation. It is a very beautiful little orchid, frequenting swampy areas. It ranges widely in Australia and I believe is also found in SE Asia.
