I would just like to say that I have seen these plants in the wild in California. They are growing inland from the coast, it is true they are only about an hour or an hour and a half inland but it is very hot there in the summer and it gets snow every winter there also. Most that I have seen are at an elevation above 2000ft. but I have also seen them below. Either way they are cold tolerant down to at least 20 degrees and heat tolerant of at least 105 degrees. That is pretty much the range during the summer and winter.

I have never tried to grow this plant but I enjoy seeing it in the wild. Fuchsia-flowering gooseberries are native to coastal southern and central California, and thus are probably not particularly cold-hardy. My guess would be that they are hardy to zone 8. As California native plants, they probably have some degree of legal protection and may need specialized growing conditions. I wouldn't recommend anyone go and dig one up from the wild.
