I suppose its habitat of steep shady canyons makes this one of the best cycads for cool areas or even light shade. I have had one flush in early March. The exception i would think. A good cycad for the bay area's mild climate and mild humidity.

This is a wonderfully tropical looking cycad, related to the Sago Palm and Cardboard Palm (neither actually palms). It is a cone producer- no flowers. As the name suggests, it's from Mexico, as most of the Ceratozamias are (15 or more other species). They are relatively slow growing and expensive plants, used for specimens in landscaping, often around pools or in shadier areas of the yard. Though they don't grow that tall, they do have a spread of up to 10', so space them apart if growing several near each other. Though it's a toxic plant, actually incidence of eating this plant by pets is extremely rare.
