This is one of the easiest ficus's to "Banyan" in Southern California. Water them a lot and don't trim them, and they can start putting out aerial roots. It is important not to trim them though.

This is not a tree I have tried to grow, but it is a magnficent landscaping tree here in Los Angeles, and the UCLA campus is covered with many very old specimens. The leaves have a rust colored underside that is spectacular looking in the wind. Nice thick trunks with long, twisted roots that tend to travel along the surface. THis Australian native does banyan (form drooping roots from the lower branches) in tropical climates.
