European terrestrial orchid found on chalk grassland and open woodland.

Bears purple spotted leaves which precede the flower spike. The whole plant disappears in July/August and flowers from 2-4 years old bulbs which multiply slowly.

Seeds are like motes of dust which mustn't be touched at all. Very difficult from seed unless you have the flasks or sow near other Dactylorhizas.
