Cyathea leichhardtiana is native to Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria).

It often has sharp, woody spines, which make it less desirable as a garden plant compared to other tree ferns.

Cyathea are listed on CITES Appendix II.

Prickly Tree Fern is an Australian species, found in wet forests and rainforests down the East coast of Australia, just reaching the extreme east of Victoria. It has a slender trunk, but does not grow tall like the Slender Tree Fern - Cyathea cunninghamii. Most plants are no more than 3 or 4 metres tall. It is distinguished by the sharp spines on the bases of the fronds.
