At least the skirted tree fern is distinct from the slender tree fern here, even the text books get the two confused at times despite the very different appearance. Both are found in deep gullies in the Strezlecki's near where I live, but the skirted seems to be more numerous.

This Australian tree fern is unlikely to ever feature in a garden. It is believed to be a sterile hybrid between the Rough Tree Fern Cyathea australis and the Slender Tree Fern Cyathea cunninghamii

It is uncommon, occuring only where its two parents grow together. Its distinguishing feature is the way that the old fronds remain attached to the trunk, forming an untidy skirt around the trunk.
