I live in Santa Cruz, Ca. I sent a cutting from my neighbor's dahlia tree to my mother in Prairie Village, Kansas late in the season. It took off beautifully, but there wasn't enough time to bloom before the weather changed. She will cut the stalk into 12" peices and try again next spring. I have suggested she leave the root in the ground and mulch it to see if it can last through the harsh winters in Kansas. I will update this in the next growing year.

I planted this in a 4" pot sometime mid-summer here in zone 9b. It only grew to about 4' tall before temps dropped this winter. It did set buds, but most were lost to winter wind/rain. 2/7/04 two buds remain and one began to open today, a beautiful dark purple with golden yellow center. Hoping for better results as the plant matures this year.

Heronswood Nursery says 10-12' begins blooming late summer in the Pacific Northwest, prolific bloomer. No mention of cold hardiness, but it did fine in 10a with our low so far this winter at 40F.
