My experiences with just about all cycads has been positive. this is one of the more common species grown in Southern California. Like all Encephalartos, this is an African native, this one from S Africa. It is one of the more shade tolerant Encephalartos, having relatively wide, dark green leaves. In the hottest areas of So Cal, it's better to provide it a little shade. However, there is a blue form that prefers full sun (this form is rare and quite costly). Like all cycads, it is a dioecious plant (separate male and female plants). The cones of this species are pale green. It has sharp, spiny leaves that have spiny ends protruding in several directions that make planting it near walkways an unwise idea. However, it is a relatively fast grower and makes a great showpiece.
