The tree ferns grow to quite tall heights in the wetter areas of the Big Island. The tallest I have seen are near the Thurston Tube (cave-like lava tube) at Hawaii National Volcanoes Park, but we have several growing in our yard. They act as great umbrella plants for growing anthuriums underneath.

I personally can't grow this plant... it is far too fastidious for my climate and inability to keep it wet. It is one of the most beautiful of all the Cyatheas, covered with a dense layer of golden hairs, and light green, perfectly formed fronds. This tree fern can become quite massive, and I have seen specimens in So Cal over 15' of trunk. I have tried over and over myself to grow this fern but it needs to be wet nearly all the time, especially when small.. and it can't stand high heat and dry air. I really don't know how much cold it can tolerate, but that's not the main problem here in So Cal.. Santa Ana winds torture this plant.
