A beautiful species, but as palmbob said, will probably never make it into general cultivation. There have been several cycad thefts in the past, and this is usually number one on their list due to its value. If you ever come across one for sale, make sure the seller rightfully owns it!

This is not a cycad I have ever tried to grow, partly because it's a bit tender for my area of Southern California, but also because it is extremely rare and expensive. It is nearly extinct in the wild (Cuba), and currently, no natural seed production is taking place there. It is being grown in cultivation, though, as it is a unique and interesting looking cycad. Its most unique characteristic is the 'bitten off' look of the leaves, as the leaflets don't shorten toward the end of the leaf as they do on most other species of cycad. I have seen huge examples of this plant in Florida, but here in So Cal, anything with some caudex visible is an impressive specimen.
