Philodendron corcovadense

This is a native plant from the southeastern brazilian coastal areas, specially around Rio de Janeiro. The specimen used to describe the species came from the Corcovado hill, where the statue of Jesus Christ is erected, so that´s why the specific name "corcovadensis", meaning "from Corcovado".

This is a non branched plant, with many single stems coming from the rhyzome undergrounds. The leaves comes from the tip of the stems: they are shiny, bright green, heart shaped, not as large as other Philodendrons. The inflorescences are green, pale green or almost white.

An interesting fact about this species is that it never produce seeds in some areas. So there may be areas where this species is abundant, with a large population formed by clones of one single individual. And it´s by dividing the rhyzome the easiest way to propagate this plant is.

It likes white sandy soil, high temperatures and regular watering. It won´t tolerate direct sun, so provide it some shade.
