This is a slow grower, even in tropical climates. It has a LOT of variabitlity, having anywhere from dark green, to bright green to blue-green leaves. The trunk develops into a really knobby, sometimes twisted short, thick shape, since the leaf bases come off slow closely together. The leaves tend to be very stiff and end in very sharp points. The also have very sharp spines at the leaf bases that can go through leather so careful when pruning. This is a favorite in some tropical countries where most other palms grow too fast. The blue or grey leaf forms are the most popular. They also transplant well.

This species is from a variety of Asian countries, from India to Taiwan, China, and southern Philippines.
