This is a slightly larger species than B textilis- slightly larger culms and slightly taller. The culms aren't quite as straight (at least in my old garden). They are pretty thick, though, and were historically used as poles to push boats through streams, hence the name punting pole. The leaves are medium sized for a bamboo. Both these bamboos are very prone to scale and mealy bug if you let the ants get too at home. All Bambusa species are pretty messy bamboo- LOTS of leaves all the time (not good around pools)
