This is actually a pretty marginal palm in zone 9b, but I found a good spot for it and it has done well in the protection of other plants. It is a solitary, skinny trunked palm with short leaves and ovoid, curled leaflets. It is commonly grown in the tropics and it is one of the few palms not endangered in Madagascar. In fact, when ordering seed from Madagascar, there is a good chance if it doesn't turn out to be what you ordered, it's this palm. And for that reason it has ended up with all sorts of names. It looks a lot like Dypsis nodifera except that its flowers protrude from within the leaves, not below like nodifera. Otherwise it's pretty hard to tell the two apart. Never seen planted en masse, but makes a nice small specimen palm for warm shady gardens.
