melocacti are weird things- most need to be in the greenhouse in So Cal, but there are few species that can tolerate our cold and this is one of them. Good to zone 10a. Likes some shade but will do OK in full sun- just looks better in the light of a cold frame or greenhouse better. Self pollinating genus. Flowers are pink tubes that pop out from the red cephalo-thing on top of the plant.
